The NFL season started off with a bang, as the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs took down the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 in Arrowhead. It was a dream quarterback match-up that featured the last two league MVPs in 2022 MVP Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and 2023 MVP Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Late in the 4th quarter with about 10 seconds remaining, Jackson missed a wide-open Zay Flowers in the back of the end zone, then saw Isaiah Likely (9 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown) come within a few blades of grass of putting the Ravens in position to either tie the game with an extra point or go for two and the win.
In Friday’s game, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Green Bay Packers 34-29. The Eagles dominated with a balanced offense and a tough defense. Newly acquired Eagles running back Saquon Barkley showed out in his debut with two touchdowns on the ground and one receiving. Jayden Reed of the Packers scored two key touchdowns and managed to keep the Packers’ back in the game. With five seconds left, on the last attempt for a victory for Green Bay, rising star quarterback Jordan Love suffered an apparent leg injury and was helped off of the field. Despite some strong efforts from the Packers, they couldn’t keep up with the Eagles’ pace and precision. The game showcased the Eagles’ strong team performance and left the Packers with room to address their weaknesses before their next matchup vs Indianapolis.
It was a scary morning to be a Dolphins fan on Sunday, as standout Wide Receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by Miami Metro Police outside Hard Rock Stadium shortly before the Dolphins’ season-opening game, the team said in a statement. Hill was pulled over for a traffic violation about a block from the stadium, detained by police, and then released. He then suited up for Sunday afternoon’s game between the Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars and scored an 80 yard touchdown. The Dolphins went on to win in a 20-17 comeback in Miami, and Hill had 7 catches for 130 as well as the long touchdown.
The hometown team won in Cincy as -7.5 point underdogs, giving new head coach Jarod Mayo his first win in his debut. The Patriots stunned Joe Burrow and the Bengals 16-10 afwithter a dominant run game and a defense that caused two turnovers, including a forced fumble on the goal line. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 120 yards and a first-quarter touchdown, Joey Slye kicked three field goals and Jacoby Brissett looked to be in command of the offense as he held onto the ball and kept the Patriots moving well enough to outlast the rusty Bengals.
Game of the Week: LA Rams at Detroit Lions
My pick for Game of the Week goes to Sunday Night Football’s match up between the Lions and Rams. The Rams looked to get revenge on Detroit after last year’s playoff loss, but they lost in overtime. Running back David Montgomery’s one yard touchdown run in overtime lifted the Lions to a 26-20 win over Matthew Stafford and the Rams on Sunday night. The Lions lead 17-3 in the third quarter after Jared Goff threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams. Los Angeles made a great comeback sending the game into overtime 20-20, but the Detroit run game was too much for the Rams.
Player of the Week: Eagles, RB, Saquon Barkley
Player of the Week goes to ex-Giant running back Saquon Barkley, who was newly acquired by the Eagles. He showed his abilities right away on a leaping touchdown catch in the end zone from Hurts. Not all backs have that type of receiving ability. Barkley rushed for 109 yards and bulled his way in for 2 rushing touchdowns. He became the second player in Eagles history to score three touchdowns in his debut, joining Terrell Owens in 2004.
