Sutton-Douglas High School football team kicked off the 2024 season on Friday, September 13th. They lost to Millis High School 27-7. Needless to say, this was not the start they wanted.
In 2023 Sutton-Douglas finished with a record of 6-5 which was an improvement from the previous season. Head Coach Pat Moseley took the time to talk with SuttonHighNews about this season.
Coach Moseley is now onto his sixth year coaching the Sutton-Douglas football team. Looking back at last year, Coach Moseley said, “The biggest thing was I needed to learn from my mistakes. I tell that to the kids, and I hold myself and the coaching staff to that. Step back, look at how we all can improve, and move forward.”
The offseason program featured players working, but not as many as Coach Moseley would like. “We had about 50% of the roster here, and while we wish that more players would commit to the building process, we will work will all players and hope that the process positively affects everyone.”
Coach Moseley believes that the experience of his team will help with this year as many of the players are four year seniors. “It helps that they are seasoned, and we know what to expect from them during the season.”
As for improvement, the biggest need is “commitment. We preach mental and physical toughness, and we have to find a way to become a closer-knit team. Put team first in many ways.”
Coach Moseley also shared his goals for this season: ” We want to qualify for the playoffs again (the first time was last year). We want to show growth as a program by winning a game and making it to the next level. We could have won the DVC last year, and we hope to be in position to win it again and this time succeed. We also want to continue to solidify the program so that it continues to improve going forward.”
The Sutton-Douglas football program is still a work in progress, but Coach Moseley has a message for those that might attend a game: “If you come to watch us, you will see a team playing hard and for each other.”
The season continues tonight with a matchup against Lunenburg High School. Kickoff is at 6 pm.
