Boys Basketball: After a decent season last year and only losing three seniors, the Sammies are excited for a possible playoff push this winter. Young talent is the name of the game for Sutton, with experienced sophomores stepping up in place of the seniors from last season. The juniors have improved from and are bound to have an important role. Seniors look to lead the team and bounce back after having a rocky (7-13) record last winter. Cam Benedict and Connor Anderson tell me, “We definitely should be better than last year, we have a skilled team with lots of depth. “Also the student section is going to be great this year and really give us a home-court advantage.”
Girls Basketball: Losing in the playoffs last year was heartbreaking, especially after going 20-0 in the regular season. This season, the Suzies look to get revenge and make a further push in the state tournament. Like the Sammies, they only lost three seniors and have a young team with great chemistry. Last year’s freshmen were incredible and a huge part of the girl’s undefeated regular season. Suzies senior Cam Kinne is very excited about the season: “This is my last year so I definitely want to make it special.” The girls start the season against Uxbridge at home, while the boys travel to Uxbridge for their season opener.
Boys Hockey: Benjamin Richard (Sophomore), Dylan O’Mara (Freshman), and Andrew Coulter (Freshman) will play in a co-op with Northbridge. The boys hope to improve on a 10-9-1 season, and they open against Hudson.
Girls Hockey: Sutton’s hockey players Leah Medeiros (Junior), Elizabeth Brigham (Sophomore), and Gabriella Carvalho (Freshman) play on the Auburn girl’s hockey team. After a (8-11-2) season last winter, Leah hopes to help the Rockets improve and make the state playoffs for the second consecutive year. The girls open up the year at home vs Wayland High School.
Cheerleading: Varsity Cheerleading has returned to Sutton for the winter basketball season! The team consists of 17 athletes in grades 7-11. You can watch them perform at all home varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball games. They hope to generate school spirit by cheering on winter sports teams, contributing to the student section themes, and holding contests for fans to win spirit items from the school store!
Indoor Track: The throwing team is improving and looking good for this upcoming season. Senior Declan O’Callaghan is curious about how the season will pan out. “We lost a good amount of seniors last year and we need to see younger kids step up and fill those roles.” Last year’s sophomores, now juniors, helped carry the load. These juniors look to be even better than they were last season. The question is–can this year’s freshman and sophomores have breakout seasons and help lead the team like last year’s did?
Wrestling: Yes, you are reading that right–we have a wrestler walking our hallways! Alexavier Majorowski will wrestle for Northbridge. Catch him in action tomorrow and throughout the season!
Follow our teams here throughout the season. Go Sammies and Suzies!
