Walking and running come with a ton of benefits both physically and mentally. For physical benefits the overarching factor is that it helps you live longer, but why?

Well, walking for even just five to ten minutes a day can help prevent many health risks such as type two diabetes, strokes, obesity, and some types of cancer. It will also improve cardiovascular fitness, help you strengthen muscles and bones, while also maintaining a healthy body weight.

As for the mental benefits there are many. I’m sure we’ve all heard of “runners high” which is a state of euphoria that many runners experience after prolonged exercises. The release of endorphins and many other neurochemicals in the brain promote a sense of happiness boosting your mood. This will also ensure that you have an easier, deeper and restorative sleep because exercise helps regulate your circadian rhythm.

Overall it increases mental clarity and focus by improving cognitive function, increasing oxygen and blood flow to the brain, and releases neurochemicals that reduce stress, anxiety and will give you a better memory, a sharper focus and increased productivity. All of these things can become addictive, motivating you to continue running or walking for both the physical and emotional rewards.

Is it more beneficial to walk/run indoors or outdoors? Well, when walking outdoors, you get a nice change of scenery. Whether you live in a place where it is normally hot or cold there are plenty of beautiful places to enjoy your walk or run like along beaches, a park, a trail or many other options. This offers mental stimulation which can make this activity much more enjoyable.

Overall it is valuable for your physical and mental well-being. The natural light helps vitamin D production and the fresh air exposure increases oxygen intake, making your workout feel more invigorating. Weather restrictions can play a substantial factor in preventing people from achieving their daily walking or running goals. A great replacement is completing this indoors, whether simply just walking indoors in your home or using machines such as a treadmill. Regardless this will make it easier to stick to your routine year round. Also the predictable essence of indoor walks ensures a flat surface rather than hills, obstacles, or uneven paths that may be damaging or tough on joints.

Walking and running are simple yet incredibly effective exercises that can help improve both your physical and mental health. By committing to one of these activities every day, even for just ten minutes, you can reduce your risk of chronic diseases, maintain a healthy weight, improve your mood, and sharpen your mind. Whether you prefer the variety of outdoor exercise or the convenience of an indoor workout, the benefits of incorporating walking or running into your daily routine are clear.

So, America, take more walks. You’ll be happier, and healthier, because you did it.
