Wearing what you want to school can boost people confidence, help self-expression, and creativity. Wearing your own clothes that you feel comfortable in should be number one priority. You should feel comfortable at school whether or not you agree with dressing in your own clothes or uniforms while at school.
If uniforms are mandatory, then you have a harder time expressing yourself through what you wear. Still, uniforms do provide a professional look for students while at school and also help keep students together because we would all wear similar outfits.
Some of the pros of uniforms included equality between students. Some students are not as fortunate as other when it comes to money for spending on personal clothing, and uniforms would help everyone feel included. More pros include showing school pride by creating a stronger sense of belonging and unity among students.
For most students, the pros of uniforms don’t reach the pros of your own clothes and personal fashion. Some people might say a pro of uniforms is less distractions amongst students due to dress code violations, but the average student would disagree. If students are getting distracted by what others are wearing, then you should mind your own business and keep your eyes to yourself. The only person who should change is a person that cares about what others are wearing.
Additional pros of wearing your own clothes and having your own style include individuality, which is the opposite of uniforms because uniforms provide equality. In other words, everyone being the same as the other. Who wants that? Another pro includes comfort as wearing your own clothes will always be better then wearing something you are forced to wear.
If students are being forced to wear something, then they are going to feel a lot less comfortable then choosing their own clothes. Comfort helps students focus and isn’t that what school should be all about?
Another down fall of uniforms is the price. Although lower income families can’t buy an excessive amount of clothes like maybe some others can, school uniforms aren’t cheap and can even put a damper on other payments a family might need to make.
In the end, students traditionally prefer wearing their own clothes to school. School uniforms definitely work some places but self-expression and comfort in one’s own clothes at school is a major plus for all.
