There are countless scary movies out there to watch, but which ones will keep you up at night, or which ones will haunt you after the credits roll?
These movies are guaranteed to keep you up at night thinking about what you just watched. These are the scariest movies of all time because they each bring their own twists and uniqueness into the horror genre.
Starting off, one of the scariest would have to be Insidious. Insidious, released in 2010, is an iconic horror movie franchise. Insidious follows the story of a family looking to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further. This movie is amongst the top of horror films because of how well done the jump scares are and the scene tones. Insidious has one of the most iconic jump scares in horror, solidifying its spot in being a terrifying film.
Arguably the scariest movie of all time is Sinister. According to scientific studies, Sinister is the scariest film in history. A study by The Scare Project measures the heart rate of a person in beats per minute(BPM) and measures heart rate variance in beats per millisecond (m/s). Your heart rate helps indicate fear and excitement as part of your fight or flight response. Then your heart rate variance measures how stressed you are. With all of these factors Sinister ranks at number one with a scare score of 96 out of 100.
Hereditary is without a doubt one of the best horror movies in recent years. It is a slow-burning psychological horror that doesn’t rely on jump scares but instead relies on the feeling of dread and family tragedy. Hereditary is so scary because the realism of a family dealing with the death of a loved one and then adding a dark and sinister aspect to it is terrifying. Hereditary ranked at number 6 with a scare score of 81.
This may be a classic and what you think of when you hear horror movies, and yet it still remains at the top, The Conjuring. The Conjuring is based off of the supposedly true Ed and Lorrainne Warren case of a family experiencing paranormal activity in their house which leads the paranormal investigators/experts coming to help rid their family of evil. The Conjuring is well done with a balance of jump scares and eeriness that works well together to create a fantastic horror.
Released in 2024, yet already making a name for itself is Longlegs. Longlegs is a psychological horror that causes you to really think. In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his (Longlegs) terrifying killing spree. The movie is very well done when it comes to sound design and film design. Longlegs features some unique jump scares that will for sure make the audience jump and if jump scares don’t scare you enough, the haunting sounds and scenes with the infamous Longlegs character will make you cringe in fear.
