Books can be a great way to take time off from the electronics–unless you use a Kindle or eBooks–but you get the point. Reading can be a time warp, so you must be careful in selecting the right kind of book. Many people have different tastes in books–some may like mystery Rom-Coms while others like horror-fantasy.
Whether you are a person who is into reading for the heart throb thrill or magical scares there are numerous books out there that one could fully heartedly enjoy! Here are some of my top reads so far…
The Inheritance Games
“The book follows Avery Kylie Grambs, a high school girl who lost her mom and is now living with her step-sister Libby. Avery has just discovered that Tobias Hawthorne, a billionaire, has left her in his will. However, Avery will not simply inherit the fortune. She must play Tobias Hawthorne’s’ inheritance game” (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers).
Review- (4.7/5) This book was a complete read, with mystery to romance to even thriller, Jennifer Lynn Barnes has really captured it all. It was impossible to put down because every turn of the page was a new clue. Captivating characters, plot and secrets make this an amusing read. Not only is this book a great read, there are also three more to go along in the series! (The Inheritance Games, The Hawthorne Legacy, The Final Gambit and The Brothers Hawthorne)
Better than the Movies
“In this rom-com about rom-coms, a hopeless romantic teen attempts to secure a happily-ever-after moment with her forever crush, but finds herself reluctantly drawn to the boy next door. Liz Buxbaum gave her heart to Michael a long time ago. But her cool, aloof forever crush never really saw her before he moved away. Now that he’s back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar–and maybe snag him as a prom date–even befriend Wes Bennett” (Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers).
Review- (4.8/5) This delightful rom-com is a MUST READ. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun young adult, romantic read and wants a story with heart and substance. This book can connect to many teenagers because it deals with grief and anxiety, aspiration and forgiveness, being true to oneself and growing up, and, of course, love.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
“This novel tells the story of the fictional Old Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo, who, at age 79, gives a final interview to unknown journalist, Monique Grant. Hugo comes from a poor background, but marries the first of her many husbands in order to move to Hollywood and pursue her career. The novel spans over the entirety of Hugo’s life, and revolves around the circumstances surrounding each of her marriages” (Atria Books).
Review- (4.7-5) This book was frankly one of the most compelling novels I’ve ever read. The amount of thought behind every chapter was apart from anything I’d read before. The author did an impeccable job at showing the reader all aspects of Evelyn Hugo. When it comes to historical fiction, I have never read something as captivating. Evelyn is a real mystery, and even after exactly 400 pages simply devoted to her, you’re left with so many questions. To put it clearly, you must read this book, as it will change your perspective on life and literature evermore.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
“Pretty and popular high school senior Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who then killed himself. It was all anyone could talk about. And five years later, Pip sees how the tragedy still haunts her town. But she can’t shake the feeling that there was more to what happened that day. Now a senior herself, Pip decides to reexamine the closed case for her final project, at first just to cast doubt on the original investigation. But soon she discovers a trail of dark secrets that might actually prove Sal innocent . . . and the line between past and present begins to blur. Someone in Fairview doesn’t want Pip digging around for answers, and now her own life might be in danger” (Random House Children’s Books).
Review- (4.8/5) Hands down, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is one of my FAVORITE books I have ever read. If you are a fan of solving puzzles and fast paced books, then this is the perfect book for you! I was kept guessing precisely until the very end of the novel. There are so many twists and turns and a marvelously laid out plot development, I could never put the book down. The author incorporated the perfect amount of humor and unspoken romance to the story without taking away from the overall suspenseful atmosphere to the book. 10/10 would recommend!
Legend
“What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem. From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths–until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect” (Penguin Young Readers Group).
Review- (4.6/5) This dystopian novel is one of the first books that really got me into reading! The whole trilogy is absolutely mind blowing and it’s hard to put this book down for even a second. It’s got a perfect blend of romance and action ending quite bittersweet. If you like books like the Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent then this is totally the book for you.
