Meet the Candidate for Library Trustee

SuttonHighNews conducted an interview with each candidate running for an office. Our goal is to provide a more comprehensive look at each candidate so voters can make an informed decision.

SuttonHighNews is not endorsing any candidate. The interviews are being released in a random order with no intent to give anyone more or less time.

All candidates were given the questions in advance. We asked the same questions, in the same order, to each candidate.

What does a library trustee do?

As a Trustee my responsibilities include:

  • Hiring and evaluating the director
  • Adopting and adjusting library policies and plans
  • Approving and supporting the budget.
  • Meeting regularly with the director to review reports and stay informed

Along with the director, Trustees develop and review priorities for the library.

As a library trustee it is also my duty to ensure that the library delivers the best possible services for the residents of Sutton.

What are other projects that bring people to a library?

The library is a valuable resource that benefits everyone in the town. Children, teens, and adults. The library offers so much more than books. It offers programs for all ages and interests. For adults there are book groups, cribbage club, knitting club, writing groups and more. For teens there are movie nights, social hours and Dungeon & Dragon club. For younger children there is of course story time, visits with a therapy dog named Glory as well as special events on a regular basis. There is a seed library that allows anyone to come in and get native plants seeds for their garden. There is the library of things. Tools, craft kits, hot spots, games, and many other items are available to town residents. In the summer there are typically several music events on the common.

Does the current library space limit what the librarians do? Do we need a new town library?

Yes, we could do so much more with a larger library. A dedicated teen space would be especially useful as well as larger meeting spaces. We are limited in the number of programs offered due to lack of space. My husband and I were the chairpersons for the previous attempt in 2017 to build a new library, but it did not pass despite receiving a grant for five million dollars from the MBLC.

What can be done to enhance the connection between the Sutton Public Schools and the town library?

I believe the library director has been proactive in trying to engage with the schools in Sutton. There are numerous opportunities for students to volunteer.

What would you like people to know about the librarian trustee positions and librarians in general?

The library staff are amazing. They are extremely helpful and welcoming. Suggestions are always welcome for new programs or materials.

I hope that more people will be interested and willing to be a trustee. It is not a highly time-consuming position but important. The Friends of the Library is another way to get involved.
