Dear America: The Halftime Show was Everything We Needed

There is no doubt that the half time show for the Super Bowl was controversial. Let’s talk about it! 

Bad Bunny is a Spanish singer, rapper, and songwriter from Puerto Rico. He is the most popular Spanish singer in the music industry at the moment without a doubt and it was clearly shown at the 2026 Grammy Awards. 

He had 16 nominations and won 6 Grammys and one of them being the album of the year, not only did he win album of the year which is a big deal but he broke history by being the first artist to win album of the year for a record sung fully in Spanish. 

Now that we know a little more about who Bad Bunny is, let’s talk about a huge controversy that was all over the media, him performing at the half time show. 

One of the controversial topics about him doing the half time show is that he isn’t American, but fun fact Puerto Rico is part of America therefore he is American.

I think many people tend to forget that when we say America we are talking about South America, North America, and Central America. 

Now the whole performance was done in Spanish, which is why so many people were upset and I completely understand the argument but also keep in mind that the NFL is a business at the end of the day. If Bad Bunny won album of the year then of course the NFL is going to want a popular artist because that means more listeners and views, more money for them. 

But those who had something negative to say didn’t really understand the message that was portrayed during the performance and that’s okay because we are about to go into that. 

The feeling of pride for Spanish speaking people that was felt during this performance was something words can’t explain. Every scene had a real symbolic cultural meaning.

• The Jibaro Scene: The traditional Puerto Rican countryman with the “Pava”, the straw hat. 
• The Sugarcane Plantation: Sugarcane cultivation was one of the most important crops in Puerto Rico for a long time, it dominated the island’s economy. 
• Coconut Stand: Roadside coconut vendors became a staple of Puerto Rican culture
• Table playing domino: In the Hispanic culture dominos is more than just a game, it’s a cherished cultural game that brings generations together by strategy and storytelling. 
• Women in construction: Hispanic women and women in general also do manual labor and should not be underestimated. 
• Piraguas Cart: Piraguas is Puerto Rican shaved ice. It’s a key symbol of culture, community, and nostalgia with syrup bottles with different flavors. 
• Taco Stand: The taco stand was an actual taco cart in California called Villas Taco Cart. The business owner’s parents moved from the homeland for a better life and immigrated to the US. 
• Boxing Scene: Puerto Rico is considered one of the best boxing nations, producing many hall of fame recruits. 
• La Casita: It represents a Puerto Rican social club used as a hangout spot where people meet, greet and talk for hours. 
• The real wedding: The wedding was actually real! It shows community, family and love. 
• The little boy and the Grammy: The little boy was a self representation of Bad bunny himself and gives him his grown up self. Album of the year grammy and tells himself to always believe in himself. 
• Light posts: It symbolizes Puerto Rico’s frequent power outages and its resilience of the people. This has been a problem in Puerto Rico for years but the politicians do nothing about it.

  

Bad Bunny came from a poor childhood which most Latinos can relate to, so seeing someone like that perform at a Super Bowl is so inspiring for many people and people can feel a sense of accomplishment. 

The whole production was connected to the Hispanic and Latino community, every single prop had a message that maybe some Americans wouldn’t understand but that’s where we must learn to be more cultured. 

 During the performance Bad Bunny stated all the countries across the Americas. The United States is not America, It’s only one country in the American continent. 

This performance was super layered and throughout beautifully. For the people that didn’t understand the lyrics you can still pick up his message through his strong symbolism. Whether you like Bad Bunny or not it is factually shown that he is an amazing artist and records have shown that with how many awards, listeners, hits, he has accomplished.
