Why do some women wear makeup while working out, and why does it cause so much debate? Makeup is usually part of a daily beauty routine, but some people believe it doesn’t belong in the gym because working out is said to be “all natural” and focusing on health. Otherwise, many women that do wear makeup while working out say that it makes them feel confident, put together, and ready for the day. This has sparked a debate in the gym community about how makeup is either empowering or added pressure.

Wearing makeup can have detrimental effects on skin. Pores get clogged from the makeup while you’re sweating and it can cause skin dryness. This is similar to removing your makeup before bed as well, because their makeup combines with oils and dead skin cells, forming acne.
Three Main Reasons Why Women Wear It:
Many women feel pressured by society and feel as if they need to conceal imperfections on their faces so they won’t be judged by other people while working out. Makeup can be used as a temporary way to feel “beautiful” all-day long, even in a place where people shouldn’t care and be comfortable working hard while not looking your greatest. People do need to stop being so critical on themselves and remember that you can still look good by showing off your work ethic, your strength and health rather than how much makeup you put in the morning.
I choose to wear makeup to the gym. I do have days I don’t wear makeup to school, and if I go to the gym a little after school I will not put on makeup just for the gym, but if I have makeup on that day at school and do go to the gym after I won’t take it off unless I feel gross and oily.
That’s another common reason why women wear their makeup to the gym. People normally go to the gym straight from school, work, or other obligations. We live in a fast-paced and busy world that can lead to it being tricky to fit going to the gym into our schedules along with all the other tasks we need to complete.

A final, common reason people wear makeup to the gym is for confidence. Women often think if they can put on their everyday makeup that makes them feel good throughout the day, that it will have the same effect while they’re working out at the gym. Sports and working out have always really been geared as a “masculine” thing. Women wanting to wear makeup while playing sports and working out shouldn’t make them seem any less capable or serious than men, or if they don’t wear makeup either it also shouldn’t make them any less feminine.
Final Opinion:
At the end of the day, whether women wear makeup to the gym is a personal preference and shouldn’t be judged by others. Everyone has different opinions and reasons for how they present themselves, especially at the gym, and that should be respected. However, it is important to be aware and understand that while sweating and wearing makeup, it can affect your skin while clogging pores or causing breakouts. As long as the person understands these possible effects and takes care of their skin, they should feel free to do what they want and what makes them most comfortable in their skin.
