The courtyard is an area in the outside middle of the school where students can eat lunch and science classes use it for research. What if it also was a vegetable garden and people could pick fresh vegetables out of it?
I spoke with David Richard, Facilities Manager of the Sutton Public Schools, and asked him about this becoming a reality. He said we have healthy soil out there and the goal is to donate the variety of vegetables to the food bank. We haven’t worked out who will tend to the garden during breaks.
A vegetable garden would be better than simply having plants. It is also would (hopefully) mean less work. We are out pulling weeds all the time, the garden would be less maintenance, and we hope the garden club would be taking care of it for summer.

What’s it going to be like? It will probably be a beautiful garden with vegetables and herbs and maybe some fruits but it’s not confirmed yet. There is still preparation to be finished.
When is it going to happen? We’re not completely sure if we are going through with this but it’s a possibility. If it is going to happen, it’s probably going to happen next year or two.
Who’s going to take care of it? There is a garden club in town that might be happy to help us take care of it during summer break and maybe we can make a new club just for the garden. There could be some opportunities for students to take care of it during the school year.
Where are the vegetables going to go? Maybe the students that take care of it will get a chance to bring some home but the goal is to donate to the local food bank. There is also a possibility to use the vegetables we grow for lunch (both federal and state policies encourage schools to grow and use their own vegetables).Â
So if this vegetable garden happens, it will probably be used for the food bank and for school lunches or for student that work on the garden to bring some home.
In conclusion if the school goes through with the vegetable garden idea it will be used for the local food bank and for students that work in the garden to bring some home.
