Midterm exams in schools are assessments that take place halfway through a school year. The testing usually is in January for schools based on semesters. A semester is a half year term in school or college, ranging normally from fifteen to eighteen weeks. There are two semesters in a school year.
Midterms cover the full material of the first half of the school year. It is to challenge and help students with critical thinking and time management skills. The purpose is to see students progress and how well they can comprehend efficiently.
The format can vary depending on what class it is. It could be tests, paper, or even projects, which are more common in elective courses.
Here are some preparation and success tips:
Start studying early, do not leave it all for the last minute. Avoid procrastinating and break down studying times over several days and try to study at least a week in advance.
Review strategically, use any form of study guides given from teacher because it can make a big difference on the complexity of the assessment itself.
If given the choice of a cheat sheet, never decline that opportunity. Especially in classes in math and science fields, it is great to have examples and formulas to look at for reference.

Study with other people who are taking the same test. Quiz one another and use flashcards.
So really, should we have midterms?
The tests are to challenge students academic ability, but also a big help for finals. Scores from midterms can help students realize they may need to study even harder for finals and specific topics in a class.
Midterms are a very debatable topic. People argue that it may increase the stress level of students way too much and other people argue that it doesn’t not matter because it’s a great academic preparation for college.

But schools also have to consider that not everyone plans to go to college. If someone doesn’t want to go to college, is there really a point in taking the test? Share your thoughts in our latest poll right here:
