What is garbage burning? Why do people burn it?
Garbage burning is the practice of burning waste to dispose of it. People burn waste to prevent it from piling up and as a source of heat.
There are many health risks from burning garbage, such as smoke, which is caused by where it is being burnt, such as a barrel, pile, etc. Waste that is burnt in barrels can smolder and release more harmful chemicals in the smoke than a normal fire would.

How can burning trash get into people’s bodies? The burning of trash can get into people’s bodies by breathing in smoke from these burnings, consuming foods or drinks that have been around the smoke or ashes, and playing in areas that have contaminated soil or dust.
Methane, which these fires produce, leads to a variety of health issues such as chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, and congestion.
Another chemical that is released from these fires that puts people’s health at risk is black carbon. This chemical contributes to various respiratory and cardiovascular ailments, such as premature deaths in people with heart or lung diseases.
How can burning waste get into people’s food? Smoke can affect crops, soil, milk, eggs, etc. This is due to the waste being burnt in a backyard, which is close to the ground where it can easily be absorbed by animals and crops, and the chemicals from the smoke can deposit themselves on to gardens, soil, crops, and feed that is given to animals.

If the feed given to animals is contaminated with chemicals from waste burning, it can affect the product they produce and be harmful to humans, potentially making them sick or even causing illness in the animals themselves.
Everyone should avoid backyard waste/trash burning. Some ways to avoid backyard burning are:

1. Reducing waste means avoiding items and products with excessive packaging and disposable materials.
2. Re-use means buying products that you can use many times.
3. Dispose means to have well-trusted companies take care of your trash and recycling instead of people doing it themselves in their backyards.
There are many different things people can do to help this cause and reduce this issue in society. People could even do the littlest things, such as supporting the creation of solid waste management systems.
These waste management systems improve waste collection and reduce the amount of waste that is on the streets or in informal dumpsites. Supporting these systems can also reduce spontaneous fires and help educate the public about this serious problem that is happening all over the world.
