Let’s be honest, the movies from last year weren’t the best. Let’s look at how this year’s movies build on established legacies and what that means for the film industry.
We got sequels such as: Jackass 5, Toy Story 5, Minions 3 (Minions & Monsters), Spiderman Brand New Day, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Ready or Not 2, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Mortal Kombat 2
The most anticipated of these are Jackass 5, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Toy Story 5. These films exemplify the impact and expectations that accompany long-running franchises, demonstrating how they both honor and challenge their cinematic predecessors.
The best example of that has to be the Marvel Movies. Phase 1 of the MCU was a magical thing.
All of Phase One led to a spectacular climax that was Infinity War/Endgame. These two movies were a combination of all the movies in a time span of more than a decade.
The main villain of Endgame was hinted at as early as The Avengers (2012), with The Avengers: Infinity War coming out in 2018 and The Avengers: Endgame coming out in 2019. Not many franchises can say that they’ve followed a commitment as loyal and legendary as that.
But those movies have already received enough attention. Let’s discuss the standalone titles that seem promising.
We have movies such as Michael, which brings the viewers into the mind of Michael Jackson.
We also have a movie called The Odyssey, an adaptation of a book by Stephen Fry, based on the writings of the Greek poet Homer.
In addition to the James Gunn DC universe™, we are getting a new Supergirl movie, which is very exciting because there hasn’t been one in almost 40 years. As an objective fact, the DCU hasn’t been performing very well in the past couple of years. But with the latest additions that director James Gunn has added to the cinematic universe, it’s become apparent that quality wasn’t the only thing missing.
It was passion.
Movies are so much more than a piece of filler content to take up the parts of your day where you have nothing going on. They’ve existed in other forms for as long as we humans have been on the earth. They’ve started as stories handed down orally to plays and have branched and will continue to branch out. So instead of knocking these new movies before even trying them, keep in mind that some of the movies you most enjoy only exist because someone took a risk and tried new things.
So should you.
